Sands of Remembrance

This was a slightly different and unique sand sculpture which Mark helped to construct. Following discussion with other sand sculptors, the Director of the White House Commission on Remembrance, Carmella LaSpada decided it would be an idea to create a sand sculpture to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of D-Day; the “Sands of Remembrance” sculpture was born. In June 2004, Mark worked as part of a team of award-winning sand sculptors to create a life size sand sculpture of the D-Day landing. The sculpture consisted of 50 tons of sand from the five landing beaches; Gold, Juno, Omaha, Sword and Utah. Mark and the other sand sculptors worked for ten hours a day for six days to create the sand sculpture. It was located on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France and remained there for about a week as people attended ceremonies to commemorate the 60th Anniversary.
