National Rail Museum
Sand sculptor Mark Anderson was commissioned to build a Thomas the Tank Engine sand sculpture. The National Railway Museum, based in York, is home to an expanse of railway icons and artifacts including Mallard, the world’s fastest steam locomotive. The museum illustrates the history of the British railways since the Industrial Revolution. Home to over 100 locomotives and railway artifacts, the National Railway Museum tells the story of railways and railway engineering to the present day. The sand sculpture was built in 1999 with two tons of Weymouth sand. It was carved from an image taken from one of the Heritage Railway postcards of the 1950’s.
