A brief history

Weymouth was the starting place of the Black Death in the Middle Ages when most of the town was wiped out. The town also played a vital role in the D-Day landings in World War II when over 500,000 troops left for France from Weymouth. The Mulberry’s (portable floating concrete harbour walls) which were towed to Normandy, were stored in Weymouth & Portland harbour.

King George III visited Weymouth many years ago to enjoy the sandy beaches. The town received more trade because people knew King George III went there. To thank him, a white horse was sculpted onto the side of a large hill just outside Weymouth. However, the sculptors were not very popular because the horse was facing away from Weymouth, giving the impression King George was leaving. Despite the controversy, the white horse still remains.
